Getting married in Turkey — your questions, answered

Yes. Foreign couples can have a fully legal civil marriage at a Turkish marriage office. Only the civil ceremony is legally binding — a symbolic or beach ceremony on its own has no legal status. Many couples make the civil marriage legal here; others complete the legal part at home and keep Turkey for a free, personal symbolic ceremony. We guide you to whichever is simpler for your country.

Yes. A civil marriage performed at a Turkish marriage office is automatically recognised in the UK — there is no need to re-register it — as long as the ceremony was valid where it took place and both partners were free to marry. Since March 2014 UK nationals no longer use a Certificate of No Impediment (CNI): instead you swear an Affidavit of Marital Status before a UK notary (or the British Consulate) and have it legalised by the FCDO. Yes — a civil marriage under Turkish law is recognised in Germany when the requirements are met. German nationals need an Ehefähigkeitszeugnis (certificate of capacity to marry) from their home Standesamt — German consulates in Turkey do not issue it. Note: the Turkish family book (aile cüzdanı) is not accepted back home; you register with the international multilingual marriage certificate (Evlenme Kayıt Örneği). Yes. Before the wedding you obtain a “verklaring van huwelijksbevoegdheid” from your Dutch gemeente — thanks to a multilingual-document agreement between the Netherlands and Turkey it is accepted without extra translation. Afterwards the Turkish certificate needs an apostille (Turkey is a Hague Convention member) before you register it at home. We guide Dutch couples through this exact sequence.

Both work. Many couples do a quick legal ceremony at home and then a relaxed, fully personal symbolic ceremony with us on the coast — no paperwork on the day. Others prefer the legal Turkish civil marriage itself. Tell us your country and timeline and we’ll recommend the simpler path.

For a legal Turkish marriage, typically: valid passports, a certificate of capacity to marry / affidavit from your country (apostilled and translated), a health report from a Turkish state hospital, and two witnesses; a sworn interpreter if you don’t speak Turkish. The exact list depends on your nationality — we send you a personalised checklist.

May to October. Late spring and early autumn (May–June, September–October) give the warmest golden-hour light, calm seas and softer prices than peak July–August heat — the most cinematic conditions for both the day and the film.
